The Evil One has chosen to end his disgraceful rule:
An ailing, 81-year-old Fidel Castro resigned as Cuba’s president Tuesday after nearly a half-century in power, saying he will not accept a new term when parliament meets Sunday.
The end of Castro’s rule – the longest in the world for a head of government – frees his 76-year-old brother Raul to implement reforms he has hinted at since taking over as acting president when Fidel Castro fell ill in July 2006. President Bush said he hopes the resignation signals the beginning of a democratic transition.
“My wishes have always been to discharge my duties to my last breath,” Castro wrote in a letter published Tuesday in the online edition of the Communist Party daily Granma. But, he wrote, “it would be a betrayal to my conscience to accept a responsibility requiring more mobility and dedication than I am physically able to offer.”
Adios, scumbag. Countless Commies are weeping their beady little eyes out right now, but real Christians are tallying up your victims and offering hosannahs to the Almighty!

The media, always willing to prop up a communist dictator, loves to talk about Castro’s survival. Next to Saddam Hussein’s electoral victories, it is one of the most fawning statements the media gives out to anyone.
Castro survived Eisenhower. Castro survived Kennedy. He survived Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Bush 41, and Clinton.
He won’t survive George W. Bush. For all you media types stopping by, let me repeat that so you can cry a little longer — Fidel Castro will not survive the reign of George W. Bush.
It is a sad day for America haters — the grand daddy champion of the champions of the underprivileged who don’t really care about the underprivileged has given up power in anticipation of meeting his maker on the short path to hell.
I couldn’t have said it any better myself.
George Bush’s Presidency has seen freedom spread from Afghanistan to Iraq, from Lebanon to Kosovo, from the Ukraine to Libya. Now our Southern neighbors are at the cusp of liberty, cleaning out an unpleasant cranny of Bolshevism in a back corner of our hemisphere. Fidel’s brother is a weakling whose power will fail. Fidel will be dead very, very soon. Cuba will join Christian world again in freedom and brotherhood.

The history behind Cuba and the rise of Castro is complex, and I do not agree with him in any way that I am aware of, but I do have to admire the fact that he stuck it to the US for 49 years. With the way we like to go around and rearrange the world, the fact that he was able to stay that long is pretty interesting.
Hooray for Castro! He hated America just like the liberals do!
God, I hope when Cuba embraces democracy they let us expand Guantanamo and incarcerate these nuts in it. That couldn’t happen soon enough for me.

I think its a little early to celebrate a smooth transition for the Cuban people. His younger brother Raul, just like Che, represents a rather extreme version of Castro’s soviet style communism. After the revolution, Castro had to reign in both of them as they wanted to continue the show trials and the killings after the war. Since Raul has been kept hidden from the public eye for so long, its hard to estimate how extreme his views still are. This reminds me of when Mao finally got so old that the Chinese communist leadership was finally able to attempt to undo the damage his dictatorship had done to both their economy and society. I’ve always felt that the embargo served to help Castro and his cronies consolidate and hold onto power much like the Berlin Wall (and huge amounts of support from the soviet government) allowed East Germany to ignore reality for so long. The moment the wall came down, the East German government was doomed by free trade, open access to ideas, and the free movement of its people. And I think the same would happen with Cuba. Can any people who follow and understand socialist dogma explain how taking the control of our economy and giving it to the government prevents anyone from getting exploited? That line of thought has always seemed to be gibberish to me…

Considering we couldn’t take him out for 50 years, his survival skills are about on par with our limitations without resorting to international outrage by suddenly bombing a relatively peaceful country(keep in mind, Cuba does not fight in any wars, not counting Bay of Pigs and the original revolution). Peaceful =/= commits no crimes, in this case.

I think that one thing we need to do in our schools is have the girls make maps of Cuba, and then have the boys throw water balloons all over the map in such a way that the paint from Guantanamo spreads across the island. I think this is the best way to indoctrinate our future leaders into telling them that America will ALWAYS have its way, no matter how many Commies stand in the way.
Bush had everything to do with Castro’s death. He started the cigar and baseball embargo against Cuba. Castro, unable to get all the smoke and fun out of Cuba, eventually died from lung cancer and crowd cheers.

That’s because Raul didn’t have much of a hand in the revolution. He wasn’t a poster child for revolucion like Che or Fidel. Also, Raul is more lenient than his brother, openly admitting so. So killing him wouldn’t do us any benefit, except to turn Cuba(and MORE of South America) against us. Don’t know if you’ve ever tangled or read about some of the cartels in Colombia, but those dudes seriously know how to sneak around and shoot people down.

Dio, I feel the need to disagree with your comments about Raul Castro’s “limited” role in the Revolution. He was one of the original members that survived the landing into Cuba, he led a military column, and played a huge role in the executions that followed the fall of Bastista government. Fidel had to repeatedly call back and admonish his brother for statements and actions committed immediately after the fall as Castro was trying to hide the fact he was forming a communist state. Not even the lower members of the Revolutionary Army realized they were part of a communist revolution. I recommend the book “Che” by John Lee Anderson as it provides interesting background not only in Che’s development into a international communist leader, but also the development of the modern Cuban state. Or you could keep spewing crap from wikipedia….

Not because of George, but because of his own age. You know, old Fidel is something like the black stain on your banner. Half a century he sat on that island directly in front of you and every attempt to get rid of him failed utterly. The USA´s secret shame. You gotta give him the due credit, he was a tough bastard and quite smart. Otherwise, he´d have not survived.

Bull[poop]x10. Gorbachev wanted to reform from beginning on and the pressure from the arms race and the situation in eastern germany and europe faciliated this decision. If there´s one man to be credited for the end of the Cold War, it´s Gorbi and not that nutter Reagan, which almost succeeded in blowing the entire planet to hell.
I think this is the best way to indoctrinate our future leaders into telling them that America will ALWAYS have its way, no matter how many Commies stand in the way.

Actually, as despicable as Castro was, the sheer fact that he managed to avoid being overthrown for all those years–that he remained in power until he willfully stepped down–is still impressive, simply because tyrants tend to be assassinated at some point. The only reason you’re not supporting him (just as you do the revoker of our First, Fourth, and Fifth Amendment rights) is because he’s Communist.
The sad part is, I doubt his progeny are any different in terms of love, compassion, and fair play (or in this case, lack thereof).
