Fred Thompson: Pro-abortion Lobbyist and Liar?

Today the New York Times drops a bombshell on Fred Thompson. I’ve already visited this topic before, but now there’s a paper trail that backs up my original post. And a lot of FredHeads will be eating hefty helpings of crow.

Billing records show that former Senator Fred Thompson spent nearly 20 hours working as a lobbyist on behalf of a group seeking to ease restrictive federal rules on abortion counseling in the 1990s, even though he recently said he did not recall doing any work for the organization.

Uh oh. First there were flat denials, then there was an “I don’t recall” excuse, and now this.

According to records from Arent Fox, the law firm based in Washington where Mr. Thompson worked part-time from 1991 to 1994, he charged the organization, the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association, about $5,000 for work he did in 1991 and 1992. The records show that Mr. Thompson, a probable Republican candidate for president in 2008, spent much of that time in telephone conferences with the president of the group, and on three occasions he reported lobbying administration officials on its behalf.

Ouch. But there’s more.

But his record on abortion has not always been as clear cut. In questionnaires Mr. Thompson answered during his 1994 Senate campaign, for instance, he checked a box stating that he believed abortion should be legal under any circumstances during the first three months of pregnancy and said, “I do not believe that abortion should be criminalized.” He has also opposed a constitutional amendment banning all abortion, also on the grounds of states’ rights.

And I guess Hollywood Fred can’t remember this:

The billing records from Arent Fox show that Mr. Thompson, who charged about $250 an hour, spoke 22 times with Judith DeSarno, who was then president of the family planning group. In addition, he lobbied “administration officials” for a total of 3.3 hours, the records show, although they do not specify which officials he met with or what was said.

Read the whole thing. I can’t take any more of this.

So does anyone still believe that Fred Thompson is riding in on a white horse to save conservatives from the Hillary beast? If they do, they’re fools. He’s riding in on a black horse and the only one he’s trying to save is himself.

A question for FredHeads and non-FredHeads alike: would you trust a liar in the White House?

Update: Patterico reminds us of the earlier denials:

Thompson spokesman Mark Corallo adamantly denied that Thompson worked for the family planning group. “Fred Thompson did not lobby for this group, period,” he said in an e-mail.

In a telephone interview, he added: “There’s no documents to prove it, there’s no billing records, and Thompson says he has no recollection of it, says it didn’t happen.”

No billing records, eh? Somebody wasn’t being forthcoming here.

Update: Welcome, Hot Air readers. For the record, Sam Brownback isn’t third tier.

Update 2: Since many FredHeads have really thick skulls, let’s get this straight: this isn’t so much about his lobbying, but his honesty. If he really is this great pro-life hero (his past statements do not back up this assertion), then it seems he would remember working for and lobbying on behalf of a pro-abortion group. When one is pro-life, abortion is murder. One would expect that Fred would remember lobbying on behalf of murder, wouldn’t one?

Update 3: Welcome Protein Wisdom readers! We are honored.

Update 4: Predictably Fred! defenders are in full spin cycle.

Update 5: Langley over at Save the GOP is very cross. His commenter(s) is/are cowards. At least Langley had the sack to stand up for his beliefs, here on a pro-Brownback site. We can respect that. Apparently commenter “Mike” is too skeered of us. What a wimp. He wants to “Save the GOP” but can’t be bothered to come over here where his feelings might get hurt. Awww. Help me, mommy! I’m so much smarter than those meanies.

Well I have no desire to head over to your site and attempt to engage in an intelligent discussion with the caliber of folks I saw over there. Nor would I try to discuss this issue with a group of third graders.

Wow, what a macho dude! We bow in his direction for his massive intelligence and gravitas. Loser. Mike wouldn’t even be a light snack for the likes of Misha.

Update 6: Red State is an excellent source of conservative news that I read every day.  But some little RomneyBot, going by the suspicious name of Rob Johnson doesn’t like a comment in this very thread.  He got very angry and wet his pants over it, but could not sack up and debate in our open comment thread, even after being invited.  What a baby.

Full disclosure: if I’d known that Rob was a whiny little RomneyBot, I wouldn’t have wasted my time debating the idiot.

  1. It’s plain to anybody who has eyes that Fred Thompson has no more respect for life than Obama or the Clinton-mafia. The fact that he has taken tainted money in return for promoting the culture of death means that Thompson has already secured his place in Hell. Once again, only Senator Brownback has remained consistently principled on this most important of American issues: The right to life itself.

  2. […] Patterico notes that Fred himself was careful all along to use the “lawyers don’t always agree with their clients” defense — which is weak in the context of an issue as morally important to the base as this one but beats lying, at least — and Corallo backed off his earlier blanket denial a few days after the LAT story broke, telling Politico, “He has no recollection of doing any work for this group. And since he was of counsel and not a member of the firm, it was not unusual for the firm’s partners to trot their clients in to meet him, get his views and even some advice.” (As Patterico notes, incredulously, they trotted people in for 19 hours?) But meanwhile, a meaningless story that should have been defused the first day suddenly has oxygen again 11 days later. And his third-tier opponents, at least, are already taking advantage. […]

  3. The guy hasn’t even declared yet and he’s got one his guys embroiled in lies. This isn’t competency. This is honesty and ethics. He sent his guy out to say it didn’t happen.

Who would work for this guy, much less vote for him? At a time when we need clarity and transparency, no one wants this liar, Thompson.

First, he spends the majority of his Senate career co-sponsoring McCain-Feingold, which impacted every single conservative issue, negatively! And before that he wasted two-tenths of one percent of government spending on a project for Westinghouse while the rest of the country was facing tough economic conditions.

He made his choices. He made his choice to work for that firm, to help that pro-abortion group, and to waste tax-payer money, and to push McCain-Feingold. This guy will never get elected.

  6. If it looks, talks, acts like a RINO then that is all it is. The only difference between Fred Thompson and the other RINOs is that he married a woman half his age who looks like a Vegas streetwalker. In fact, that is probably where he met and married her.

Sam Brownback in 2008, not only because he is the most qualified, most Conservative, and a Christian, because his wife doesn’t look like a slut.

  7. Whoa, the vitriol! First of all, I’d say it is a matter of competency – Thompson’s pre-campaign spokesman, Mark Corallo, clearly went overboard with his straight-up denial that he immediately gave reporters – you’ll notice that Sen. Thompson never denied the charge, simply said that he had no recollection of the lobbying noted, and said that he wasn’t going to debate every action of his long legal career. So to imply here that Sen. Thompson lied is ludicrous.

I’d be careful before you start condemning people to Hell. It doesn’t help your candidate, who is already battling a perception of being too much of a Bible beater.

I’d also be cautious about throwing out the RINO charge, when Sen. Brownback is a big supporter of “comprehensive immigration reform” (read: amnesty before security) and is as much of a big government Republican as our current President.

Oh, and lastly? Calling a candidates wife a “slut” and “Vegas streetwalker” completely eliminates any hope you had for a serious political commenter such as myself to take you seriously. On one hand we have a commenter on this site condemning Fred Thompson to Hell and implying that he’s not a Christian (James Dobson, anyone?), then just a few comments later we have another offering up rather unChristian, slanderous accusations against Mrs. Thompson!

    You people amaze me.

  8. […] Similarly, if it puffs you up to call something a lie that could have just as plausibly been a mistake — all while labeling Thompson a “pro-abortion lobbyist” (which, while technically true 17 years ago, is hardly the same as being a pro-abortion candidate in 2008, as the title implies) — knock yourself out. 9. Now we’re judging candidates on what their wives look like? I mean give me a break but I have to say that Ann Romney sure is quite attractive for her age. I like Brownback, but I have to say that the “Three State” solution to Iraq is just absolutely ridiculous. Can you imagine what that would be like here in the US? Liberals here, Catholics there, Methodists here, Mormons there. And you’d better believe that the Mormons would take Utah as its state. It’d be ludicrous! I mean that idea is the most insanely idiotic solution I have ever heard of. No wonder most of the GOP doesn’t take him seriously as a candidate.

    Comment by Braden — July 19, 2007 @ 12:37 pm | Reply

  10. Fred is turning more Clintonian by the day with his trying to spin his work for the pro-choice group. He flat out lied and it was a sure bet when they dared for the records there were not records, that someone would find them.

Excuse me but for years Fred lied about being the person who broke the Watergate deal wide open with the question about the tapes and now we find that he knew it was true from an investigator three days before and had notified the Nixon WH. His not exactly telling the truth goes back years and years.

No thank you to the Nixon mole — it is an affront to our nine candidates who have been out campaigning for this lobbyist to now September so he can avoid another debate.

Shame on Fredheads for having their heads so far buried in the sand that they will never come up for air. You want a conservative support someone like Brownback or Hunter because Fred is still the actor now with his southern accent playing the part of candidate and who knows when the actor and the person are separate.

  15. A word to the wise: you might want to pull your fangs out of all the legitimate GOP candidates because you might have to end up supporting them next year.

I really have to ask why?

After the landslide victory we delivered to Reagan in ’84, we got nothing. Then we tried to get a true Christian elected in ’88 with Robertson, and got Bush instead. Yeah, Bush promised us a lot, but in the end he reneged. Then we had to put up with 8 years of reprehensible and immoral behavior again, especially frustrating in 1996 when we were forced to support that idiot Bob Dole.

And now Bush has been a mixed record at best. We came out and were responsible for his landslide in ’04, and what’d we get? Nothing. A bunch of pandering bullshit. He even rolled back the abortion pill.

Our only chance to win handidly in 2008 is to support a True Christian. That’s why I support Brownback, and as a second choice Huckabee. I’m done with pandering. I’m done with giving my heart and soul to a bunch of guys who want nothing but tax cuts, and tell us that hey can’t do anything about halting abortion and the teaching of secularism in our schools.

Fred’s a pandering RINO. A Hollywood immoral liberal dressed up in jeans and a flannel shirt driving a rented pickup truck pretending to be a true American. I won’t support him, ever.

  16. One more thing. I’m reading some of te comments over at Protein Wisdom and Hotair that you linked here… They’re typical of the crap we get from RINOs, essentially dismissing our concerns.

  17. I’m a RINO because I’m supporting someone who is a Federalist, who had a 100% pro-life voting record while in the Senate (and 0% from NARAL, the pro-choice group), and who didn’t crave power and chose to leave Washington? Right. And Brownback is some kind of conservative hero because he wants to subsidize ethanol from corn from his state, driving both oil and food prices up so he can pander to his state’s farmers? Sure. Sorry, I believe in the free market.

And Langley is an old English name, so sorry to burst your bubble. You’re going to have to do better than that.

  18. Actually, Bob Baffett, I’ve addressed this Actor for President issue before.

    Christopher Walken is running. Heh.

FredHeads just don’t care that Fred! lied and don’t care that he’s made plenty of pro-choice statements over the years. They don’t seem to care that he was a lazy Senator who just couldn’t handle the workload. His heart just wasn’t in it.

But they prefer to view this as noble, that he “didn’t crave power” and “chose to leave.” Ha! That’s really funny. What it must be like to have a pretzel for a mind!

    Comment by Psycheout — July 19, 2007 @ 2:20 pm | Reply

  19. Oh no, he made pro-choice statements! He was pro-choice at one time, and changed his mind! But you have to ask the question, was it an honest conversion, like Ronald Reagan, or did the timing of it suggest political convenience, like Mitt Romney? We all know the answer to that, because he voted (which is more than just talk) 100% pro-life in the Senate, years before he considered running for President. So that straw man is knocked down.

“Lazy Senator”? You really want to use the same talking points that the DNC does? If you want to fault him for not trying to legislate the population to death, fine. As for me, the way I see it the less a Congressman or Senator does in Washington the better. We already have enough waste at the Federal level, we don’t need to legislate more.

Yeah, that’s right, he didn’t crave power. There were suggestions for him to run for the Presidency in 2000, and he decided not to. Now, the times have changed, he sees this election as important for America and for his kids and future generations, so he feels that he just may be a “man for the times.” Senator Brownback may feel the same way, and I don’t fault him for running if he feels he is the best man for the job.

You can engage in insults and worthless garbage all you want, that’s fine with me. I actually pick on Sen. Brownback and other candidates for specific policy reasons, and I don’t resort to high-school crap-flinging contests about candidates’ wives and what they said over 10 years ago while ignoring their actions while in elected position.

  20. So if that videotape turns up of Fred! personally performing an abortion over a decade ago, will you say, but he’s pro-life NOW?

    FDS knows no bounds.

And if you want a candidate who isn’t going to do any work, perhaps you should be supporting “None of the Above.” It’s admirable of you to praise a hypothetical legislator who does nothing at all. Sheesh. Talk about low expectations. I suppose that’s why you like Hollywood Fred. You want someone who sits in his trailer all day and comes out once in a while to speak a line or two. Perfect.

    Comment by Psycheout — July 19, 2007 @ 3:11 pm | Reply

  21. Um, no. I just don’t want someone like Sen. Brownback who sees fit to legislate when I can watch a tv show. See:
Keep Brownback Out of the White House, part 1,327

And I like how you warped “If you want to fault him for not trying to legislate the population to death, fine.” into “You want someone who sits in his trailer all day and comes out once in a while to speak a line or two.” and a “hypothetical legislator who does nothing at all.” Classy.

    Comment by Langley — July 19, 2007 @ 3:24 pm | Reply

  22. From Langley’s link:

Presidential candidate Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) is seeking to establish a new federal standard that would prevent violent television shows from airing on broadcast networks before 10 p.m.

The measure could prevent programs like “24” and “Law & Order,” which used to star another GOP presidential hopeful, former Sen. Fred Thompson (Tenn.), from being aired before 10 p.m., according to the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB). The group is lobbying against the amendment.

Snicker. I see, it’s all about Fred! Thompson with you FredHeads. You’re worse than DeadHeads. You’re all crabby at Brownback’s attempts to protect children from excessive violence on television because you might not be able to see your favorite actor Fred Thompson in that stupid Law and Order TV show before 10pm. Give me a break.

FredHeads have thick skulls. I bet they don’t even need to wear motorcycle helmets!

    Comment by Psycheout — July 19, 2007 @ 3:30 pm | Reply

  23. My complaint with Brownback’s proposed law has nothing to do with Fred Thompson; I was quoting an article from The Hill newspaper that included the Law and Order part because it was a way to tie another candidate into it (other readers, feel free to go check it out, Psycheout conveniently failed to mention that the quote he pulled was a long part of a quote that I pulled from the newspaper article).

That’s the problem with you. You take me quoting an article that makes that reference to mean that I’m pissed the Brownback wouldn’t let me watch Fred Thompson before 10:00. I don’t care about not being allowed to watch Law and Order before 10… I care about not being allowed to watch a bunch of shows, including that one, before 10.

Once again you try to misconstrue the issue and come off not responding to my actual criticism, which was that Brownback is in favor of big government telling me when I can and can’t watch a tv show that may have sex or violence. That’s the point. Get it?

  27. Well, sorry to say it, but he’s right. Rather than respond to my criticism of Sen. Brownback (which is fair and based on his political actions and opinions) and have an honest debate about a Thompson candidacy, you keep making ludicrous statements that have nothing to do with the topics at hand. Your response to my objections to Brownback controlling the TV waves is “turn off the tv?” Your response to my objections to “comprehensive immigration reform” is… what, exactly? Your response that Sen. Thompson had a 100% pro-life record in the Senate, years before running for President, is… what?

The sad thing is there are some valid reasons why Brownback would make a good candidate but you continue to engage in a worthless insult-driven sideshow. For example, he is solidly pro-life, and he also got a very favorable report from the Club For Growth’s “White Paper” on him. He has argued for an alernative flat tax option, and the tri-state idea in Iraq could be a viable possibility.

You choose not to argue valid points, but instead to respond to my valid criticisms of your candidate and defenses of my candidate with a bunch of crap. Too bad.

Why is this so wrong? Children shouldn’t have to be subjected to the level of sex and violence in those shows.

You’ll rant like a mean person that us Fred Heads hate everything, yet your the clown who starts it all off by opening your blow hole and spraying all this poo about Fred that will have almost zero effect on him.

Oh, and speaking of stains, I hope you’ll eventually be able to get out the I’M With Fred Fecal Stain on your back, after Fred takes a huge poo on you and this site.

Your days are numbered, it’s only a matter of time before BrownBack realizes that he can’t win. He’ll return back to the Senate and do his job. You’ll return to whatever mental institution you came from and get back to sitting in a corner drooling all over your area and wetting your pants.

Don’t you think for one second (actually you are physically unable to think so let me rephrase this) Don’t you ever utter such manure again on this or any other Christian, Republican blog.

Are you so stupid as to think that Sam Brownback isn’t reading this and logging your ISP information? You do realize, don’t you, that when Sam Brownback is elected President, and he will be because it is God’s will, that he won’t be watching you like a hawk? You are bordering on treason and that, my dear, is a Federal crime. You could end up in Guantanamo with the rest of the infidelic terrorists.

I say that because as Christian, and like it or not I have a duty to look after the mentally challenged when I see them and that is just what you are, a lunatic.

You’d do well to change your name, move to another country and start over because you are probably on an FBI most-wanted list right now, and sissy-boys like yourself will not fare well in a prison.

Now shut up and don’t say I didn’t tell you the truth.

  39. Hey Mrs T.D. Gaines Crock of poo.

    BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I can see that you’ll be joining Suckout in that mental ward as well.

Compared to you, he looks like a normal person.

You should be the one keeping your big fat mouth shut. Now you’ve gone and removed all doubt that you are a nutcase. LOL

Your jumping to his rescue like this, is only embarassing him. Way to go Dipsy Chick! LOL

Thanks for helping me do that. 😉

  40. I’m not going to respond to the idiotic back-and-forth between psycheout and that other character.

But to Harry, I’m not preventing you from controlling what your kid watches on TV. Go on right ahead, after all, it’s your right and responsibility as a parent to do so. It’s not the FEC’s right or responsibility to do it for you, however, and in the process control the time at which I can watch shows on my own accord. That’s Brownback’s problem.

Also, on an irrelevant note, calling Law and Order rated R seems a little out there, don’t you think?

  42. Hey Mrs. V.D. Crock of Poo,

Hoping that someone dies is certainly not very Christian like.

It only makes you look like the King of All Nutcases over here.

This is what Senator Brownback has for supporters?

    Very Sad.

Give it time Mrs V.D. Crock of Poo, your mega meltdown is coming.

God help the man who married your sick bottom.

[Ed Note: Knock off the potty language. And how can a Mrs be a King?]

  45. The comments on this blog from Brownback supporters are beyond ludicrous to the realm of comedy. Are you serious? Warning about FBI watch lists because a commenter simply said that your candidate wouldn’t win the nomination? Do you take anything that you write seriously, or is it all a satire?

The same people who decry one commenter’s “pottymouth” say in the same breath that the commenter is going to shove something “up his blowhole.” I guess making crude comments (oh by the way, I like how you feigned concern that I’d died, real classy there) is okay for holier-than-thou supporters of Sen. Brownback, but not for any supporters of other candidates. It is people like you whom harm public discourse, who don’t want others to make crude comments, yet don’t see a problem with making them yourselves.

Grow up and get some class. If someone says that your candidate won’t win, so what? Shrug it off and argue why you think he will, don’t spew nonsense. If I point out Brownback’s Big Government designs and other faults of his candidacy, try responding for once instead of just making stupid jokes about “FredHeads.”

Not a single valid point that I have brought up has been responded to in a reasonable manner; instead you resort to character assassination. You guys are jokes, and you are an embarrassment to your candidate and the Republican party in general.

  47. Some people have no sense of humor. To them I say, get over yourselves. Life is a gift from G-d. If you can’t enjoy yourself while you travel through it, it’s your problem, not ours.

  48. Friend,

You said: “But until the day comes when Senator BrownBack realizes he can’t win and your little BrownBack Mountain blog goes bye bye, keep up the good work over here.”

So what are you saying, that we should compromise our Christian principles and just elect Hillary Clinton because she’s popular. Let me take you back to an old book called the Bible, where God tells us quite clearly what’s important: It’s not just about winning, it’s about staying true to our values.

If we say true to our values, God will take care of the rest. The only candidate that has kept true to his values is Sam Brownback, and that is why on Election day he will receive my vote and I predict, the votes of the majority of right-thinking Americans.

  50. You might want to check out that 3.3 hr.(although I believe he lobbied for the family planning organization). It seems this was billed to a foreign attorney for advice he gave him on getting the venue changed for 2 of the terrorists responsible for Pan Am Flight 10 that blew up over Lockerbie, Scotland. The change of venue was successful and one suspect got off, the other got life with parole after 20, 6 years served. Check out today’s NYT.
