RFID: A Great Idea Whose Time Has Come

RFIDEver heard of RFID (radio-frequency I.D.)? It has the potential to make life more convenient and safe for all of us. Sadly, China is leading the way. The United States should be in the forefront of this exciting technology that will make purchases more convenient and can be used to keep lawbreakers and terrorists at bay.

It has already been implanted in pets to ensure that Fluffy and Fido don’t get lost. It has been implanted in people and used to get exclusive access to trendy clubs. And it will be implanted in our troops to help keep track of them and to identify their remains. RFID is attached to CDs and DVDs to reduce shoplifting. Have you ever heard that “beep” when some kid tried to sneak a rap CD out of the store under his coat? That’s RFID.

It can be attached to cars to allow drivers to get through toll booths without having to stop to pay. It will be inserted into passports and ID cards so that people can be identified from a distance without having to physically show the ID. It’s amazing how many uses this device has!

Starting this month in a port neighborhood and then spreading across Shenzhen, a city of 12.4 million people, residency cards fitted with powerful computer chips programmed by the same company will be issued to most citizens.

Data on the chip will include not just the citizen’s name and address but also work history, educational background, religion, ethnicity, police record, medical insurance status and landlord’s phone number. Even personal reproductive history will be included, for enforcement of China’s controversial “one child” policy. Plans are being studied to add credit histories, subway travel payments and small purchases charged to the card.

Incredible, isn’t it?

Security experts describe China’s plans as the world’s largest effort to meld cutting-edge computer technology with police work to track the activities of a population and fight crime.

This technology can be used to keep scofflaws and terrorists out.

“If they do not get the permanent card, they cannot live here, they cannot get government benefits, and that is a way for the government to control the population in the future,” said Michael Lin, the vice president for investor relations at China Public Security Technology, the company providing the technology.

Fortunately America is catching up. But we have a long ways to go.

But rising fears of terrorism have lessened public hostility to surveillance cameras in the West. This has been particularly true in Britain, where the police already install the cameras widely on lamp poles and in subway stations and are developing face recognition software as well.

New York police announced last month that they would install more than 100 security cameras to monitor license plates in Lower Manhattan by the end of the year. Police officials also said they hoped to obtain financing to establish links to 3,000 public and private cameras in the area by the end of next year; no decision has been made on whether face recognition technology has become reliable enough to use without the risk of false arrests.

It would seem prudent to go ahead and implement the system and iron out the bugs later. There are terrorists out there who want to kill us. New Yorkers and Londoners know about this first hand.

Of course the ACLU and various other nutty groups are more than happy to leave us wide open to terrorist infiltration due to their own paranoia. Their baseless fear of RFID, the technology of the future, should be ridiculed and ignored. After all, you have nothing to fear if you have nothing to hide.

Update: Real ID scofflaw states will face penalties.

Americans may need passports to board domestic flights or to picnic in a national park next year if they live in one of the states defying the federal Real ID Act.

And it also serves, as the Chinese show, a good job in controlling the population everytime necessary. WOW, that stuff could be right out of 1984.

When will they finally realise that all those petty “security” laws can be used against them as easily as against any terroristic threat? Ach, Ben Franklin was right, he who sacrifies part of his freedom to gain security deserves neither fredom nor security.

After all, you have nothing to fear if you have nothing to hide.

Except perhaps for the not so nice elements of your government.

I wonder if you would finally decide. Always you moan about how the government should play a less significant role in public life. One moment later, you advertise what could easily be the beginning of a police state…
PS: Nice excuse. Used afaik by all kinds of “security agencies” behind the Iron Curtain a few decades ago and similar organisations.

  4. I agree. My opinions notwithstanding, those cards would greatly increase the level of government influence in your daily lives… which is something I thought you stood against.

  5. I am not so concerned about controlling the population. But imagine this. What happens when someone figures out how to clone an RFID (oops, already done) just from you passing through a door or scanning your tag over a reader, then they go out and commit a crime using your RFID. It isn’t like the lawbreakers and terrorists are going to say, “come chip me.” People aren’t pets. They are a little more creative, and aren’t subject to an owner.

Another problem with these tags is that they are only as secure as the number of factors validated. I would have no problem with RFID + biometrics + PIN, but even that has problems because it relies on information outside of the chip itself. It is too simple a thought to assume that you can mark everyone with a tag and approve or deny access based off of that tag. I see your point about wanting to make it more difficult for terrorism, but it won’t make a bit of difference unless everyone participates. That is never going to happen. You will never get everyone to the point where they will participate. So you will always have “those who will” vs. “Those who won’t” because the USA is still a democracy.

  6. What struck me as interesting is the endorsement of RFID on this fanatical Christian blog. Most of you people tend to think that the RFID chip is the mark of the beast, seeing as the two places for it to be implanted are on the forearm, and the forehead. Right out of Revelation, according to you nutjobs.

If it IS the mark of Satan, I’ll be first in line.

  13. This is far more serious than you think, When you look @ it.

My grandmother gave me fair warning before she died not to take any mark, if so I would surley not join her in Heaven, I would end up going to Hell. She was serious. It was the really only important thing that stuck in my head from an early age. Knowing this now I have the seal of God in my forehead, For I know the Sabbath is Saturday not Sunday as the Christian- Pagan Pope tells the world and when most of the world go to church, everyone is worshipping the Sun (Morning Star/Eastern Star- Lucifer).

Now I know from research & study that Verichip here in Cincinnati makes them, there’s a DR. up the street from where I live that is the only one in the this area that can put them in you. I may have one in me as far as I know from serving in the military, at least not in my right hand for it was broken recently, I checked the x-rays.
In Mexico City the police have chips in their hand to be able to file a gun. You can put them in your children to keep them from getting kidnapped, or your dog for finding him. The new future King of Britian, Prince William ARTHUR Phillip-Louis, (The return of King Arthur) has one in his hand. The funny connection is UFO Abductees had doctors pull them out during surgery from various locations on the body from numerous patients, only for them to be pictured and taken away, the numbers are over 10,000.

This will come about from Bio-metrics systems already in place in high security places, we will have a 20/20 system in place as in Europe, The problem w/ Illegal Immigration; yes we have one but BUSH doesn’t do anything about b/c here in the next couple of years we will no longer be the UNITED STATES we will be the NORTH AMERICAN UNION so there is no front door/ back door to our neighbors we will not be able to do anything about it unless we pick up arms, New Drivers License/ Federal ID to replace State ID’s, if you lose them the 1st time you pay for a replacement, 2nd time a large fine, 3rd time you will be placed with a mark.
If you don’t have one or remove it you’ll go off to a internmant camp/ underground base or to a worker camp being managed by Halliburton to do government work. Bardering will be the only system used if you don’t want 1984 know what your doing, unless what you trade has a RFID, better get a RFID Jammer. Don’t forget the implants that you can get in your forehead to upgrade your mind and make an unlimited amount of storage space for the brain, to interact with your CPU and all elctronic items, imagine the migranes then. You could listen to music or talk to someone without anyone hearing it or to say the least you wouldn’t have to talk at all. sounds good until 1984 jams your implant, disables you, and wisks you away, or kills mass amount of people with a EMP bomb device.

They are the new fashion statement everyone must have one, then you will not be able to do anything with out one.

The New World Order is in affect since 9-11, a conspiracy was carried out… most believe there is none but how long will it take till the masses in the sea wakes up from the matrix, minds are already being controlled, Illuminati “the all seeing eye” is our leader amoung others; WTO, TRI-LATERAL COM, Brandenburg, etc. Our Society is materialistic and worships $$$ (2nd Archangel of Lucifer Moloock a lesser god) You can find this in Bohiemeum Grove, CA. $$$ will be comprimised by a 2nd great depression, economic crisis, or nuclear terror attack caused by the government, Terrorists, or domestic terrorists. This will bring in FEMA, to take our guns away, claim martial law, cease all business, claim all assets, and force all to comply or to be taking away. Sounds like the rapture when 1/3 are left 2/3 disappear. Defend your Constitutional rights now!

Hope this opens eyes, Glad to contribute and add to your blog Psycheout!!

The technology is good enough to catch any person that has a warrant in the FBI database as well as all the other agencies. As long as they communicate and share their intelligance, then Reliable enough They are able to prevent false arrests. This was used in Cincinnati during Bengals and Reds games, They walked away with many people that committed previous crimes, check our local news, then go to national news to do research.

If you don’t believe the power of control then you are seriously wrong in the confidence that our goverment has over its society. The Navy is in charge of every object flying over earth, then all those things flying over are looking at you, listening, reading the time on your watch.

You don’t like having privacy in the city move to the country, but the minute you go into a store they know where you are and will be a few steps behind you.

  20. Who benefits from this technology besides government and large corporations? Just remove the privacy issue for a moment… do you seriously want to be so completely targeted with advertisements that you can’t even walk through a mall without seeing or hearing 100 of them directed at you? How many of you have see Minority Report? Did that look enjoyable?

It’s just another example of the exploitation of the poor and the slippery slope toward losing all forms of privacy. Personal privacy is a staple in the Bill of Rights and has been protected time and again by the Supreme Court.

    Comment by Adam Nelson — August 14, 2007 @ 1:33 pm | Reply

  31. He did talk about gay marriage during His earthly ministry because He had already done that in The Law. During His time on earth He was more concerned about talk relief for the working class. Rome’s taxes to support the bread and circuses program for the poor who refused to work was destroying the middle class. Jesus came to earth to set that right.

But the truth remains in 2008 the only way the Demoncrats can take the Presidency is if Jesus allows to to punish America.

So by your logic, BJ could rape and murder his way through life and Jesus would be fine with it?

Rape and murder would against secular law which as a Christian I am commanded to obey. That’s why we Christians are moving to reclaim this nation for Christ so we can align secular law with Biblical law.
