Virginia is taking prudent action to be sure liberal Ron Paul and Rudy Giuliani supporters don’t try any dirty tricks to throw the GOP nomination to a lefty. Since the Democrat party has a history of attempting to steal elections left and right, this is a great idea.
If you’re planning to vote in Virginia’s February Republican presidential primary, be prepared to sign an oath swearing your Republican loyalty.
The State Board of Elections on Monday approved a state Republican Party request to require all who apply for a GOP primary ballot first vow in writing that they’ll vote for the party’s presidential nominee next fall.
If you’re not a Republican, if you won’t take the oath, you don’t get to try and skew the results. Problem solved!
Perhaps this concept should be extended to the general election. If you take an oath to support the GOP when you register to vote, no problem. If you won’t, well then, your registration goes in the circular file. Or maybe Democrats can be allowed to vote on Wednesday. Keep in mind, I’m just brainstorming here.

EB, I actually agree with everything you said here. Vowing for a party prevents liberal and conservative ideas, however bad, from forming. I don’t really care for the two party system, but I think that elections ought to be held faster so the media makes less profits.

Nope, gotta disagree wholeheartedly on that one. We are citizens and Americans, and above all, individuals, and we have a right to vote for whoever we feel is the best candidate, regardless what party we belong to, or like me, even if we don’t belong to any party. Our votes should be cast for the person we feel would do the best job. Party affiliation should have nothing to do with our final decision, and we should not be forced to vote for someone we despise just because we promised to vote for his party.
The whole idea of pre election promises is just plain stupid. But then again, you would expect that from the party that gave us the punk and the godfather. Hmmmm, didn’t that punk steal the last elections?

having rethought the idea of a vow, i do see the flaw in it. it’s legally unenforceable,and not every GOP voter wants to vote for any GOP candidate. i’m willing to bet good money that most of the pachyderms here wouldn’t vote for Ron Paul, even if they all took the vow. and i’m not sure what psycheout’s saying about the Democrats. circular file probably means garbage. voting on wednesday, i don’t follow; can someone explain that one for me?

Circular file does indeed refer to the garbage can. I guess it’s an office worker term.
About election day, it usually falls on tuesday, if my memory serves me correctly. Therefore, the following day would be a perfect time for Democrats to make their voices heard at the polls.
Now about the unenforceable part, while true, conservatives, unlike liberals tend to keep their word. Just because liberals are unprincipled liars does not mean that conservatives are as well. Liberals who think that way are projecting.

Sounds like signing a voting promise serves a few purposes, all negative.
1. It’s unconstitutional
2. It’s an invasion of privacy at the voting booth by a party.
3. It takes away freedom to vote for your candidate in favor of someone you may not want to vote for.
4. It’s fiscally irresponsible to add another increase to an already big government that serves little purpose other than to waste tax payer money so some corporate lobbyist organization can profit.
5. It’s a fascist ploy to control the public via hold them hostage to only vote for 2 party candidates.
6. It further dumbs down the public from being a free thinking society than it currently is.
This is merely another Conservo-Fascist ploy to disenfranchise voters again just like 2000.

Now Sisyphus — that’s part of what makes America great. We all get a vote. And like it or not, even the people with whom you disagree DO have a right to have a say in who they want to lead them.
Unfortunately, I do think that there seems to be a general dumbing-down and sensationalizing of the entire political process. It’s all about the sound bites, the “electability”, and other superficial twaddle that gives no indication as to whether or not someone would make a good president.
But that requires people to really research the candidates and their stands on the issues — and unfortunately, so many people on BOTH sides of the political spectrum just aren’t willing to devote the time to that anymore. It’s a crying shame, really — voting is one of the most important decisions you make, and yet most people seem to put more thought into what to have for lunch.

I just wanted to add (not take away from, she makes sense which is refreshing for this site)that another thing we need to get away from in politics is money. From beginning to end of every campaign the news keeps us updated on the financial achievements (how much they manage to dupe people out of) of the candidates, giving the best chances to the highest earners (even though they didn’t actually “earn” any of it).
Basing a political decision on how much money a person can trick you into giving them is just wrong. If you look closely, money is at the root of almost all evil in the world today. Even going to war depends on having the money to wage a war.
Candidates should have to campaign without money, and thus leave all greed out of the running. Air time could be donated evenly to all candidates by all networks, the same applies to travel expenses etc., they could be donated by the travel angencies. All candidates would have an even field of battle, so to speak, since the amount of campaigning they are able to do is no longer reliant on how much money they have. Who knows how many great presidents we may have missed because they couldn’t afford to campaign.
