Fake Blogs

Faux BlogsThere has been an annoying proliferation of fake blogs lately. Fortunately Sam Brown and the rest of the B4B Team do a great job of moderating the comments, so you never see links to these fake blogs. You may not even know that they exist. As a side note, we get more than 500 spam comments per day here. (59,166 spam comments vs 16,383 legitimate comments to date.) Keeping up with them is a tiresome and disheartening task. Anyone who works on a blog knows exactly what I’m talking about.

Spam comments normally either say something short and stupid or long and stupid, having nothing to do with the topic and link back to their own websites hawking discount pharmaceuticals (viagra, cialis, phentermine, methamphetamine, etc.). Spam comments often contain dozens if not hundreds of links, usually to porn sites. These are annoying enough, but fairly innocuous and easy for the spam filter to catch. I have been documenting some of the stupider spam to hit our filter for quite some time.

Fake blogs are a different beast altogether. Fake blogs tend to be of the news aggregator type. Basically they grab a bunch of text from someone else’s blog post and try to get a trackback from their target. We delete these trackbacks immediately. Why? First of all, it pollutes the comment sections. Second of all they attempt to drive traffic to their own sites, again hawking pharmaceuticals, porn, phoney insurance, etc. Linking to these fake blogs would also boost their site ranking. This I will not do.

One of the main problems with these fake blogs is that they obfuscate search engine results. The content that we produce here appears on dozens of fake blogs trying to get traffic based on our material. That is their purpose, after all. They want to get you to their site, so they can serve you advertising and try to fool you into buying their worthless crap.

Search tools like Technorati and Google Blog Search need to make the attempt to or do a better job of filtering these fake blogs from their search results. To see the kind of fake blogs I’m talking about, take a look at blog reactions you’ll find on Technorati or Google Blog Search. Blogs with names like “auto insurance quote,” “ephedra,” “order codeine,” “b1g p3n1s” and the like are these fake blogs I’m taking about. “University Update” is another fake blog that’s been around for many months and has been consistently leeching off our valuable and thought provoking content.

Typically these automated posts begin with “_ wrote an interesting post today on _. Here’s an excerpt: …” or “Wow! While surfing the net today I found a great post written by The Queen of England. Here is an outline: …” (Note: They almost always get the author’s name wrong.) And they not only link to and steal the content of our posts, but they routinely link to individual comments, even the stupid ones. Example: “Wow! Spacebrother wrote a really interesting post today. Here is an excerpt…” There’s several things wrong with that, least of all that Spacehippie has never written anything of interest in his entire life.

I know this post about Internet pollution is rather technical in nature, but to make it simple: those who run fake blogs and blog spambots deserve to be shot dead. Any questions?

And don’t answer with “I couldn’t understand some parts of this article, but it sounds interesting.” TIA.

Update: More general information about this annoying subject can be found under these topics: blog scraping, scraper site, comment spam, spamdexing. Even more generally, the word “scumbag” applies quite nicely.

TurdUpdate 2: Profile of a turd. Most of you have heard of Blogger. Signing up is free and once you do, you can set up and run a blog of your own. Enter newbie, TTSAY. I say newbie because this person just set up a blogger account this month. This user already has set up at least 61 free blogs (more may not be listed), all named “buy meridia.” Yet TTSAY has never written a post himself. Instead TTSAY has stolen content from other blogs, including this one.

This is not the purpose of free blogs and this is not the intent behind fair use. TTSAY is a douchebag and a leech. Blog providers should really crack down on this disgusting conduct before people are drowning in this cesspool of useless duplicated content and abandon blogs altogether.

Since you fit to both categories you should just delete yourself.

Nope, it was just plain boring, but we are getting used to that.

  14. LOL- Thanks Psycheout, I’ve seen these quite a few times on my blog, and I have to admit I’ve always wondered what the point is. But as far as the spam goes, I’ve tweaked my settings so that it’s only a slight nuisance (only a few per month that I actually have to delete). I rarely venture into my askimet cache, but when I do, it’s pretty surprising to see just how desperate viagra is. Crazy.

Anyway, even more annoying than all this is the appearance of a blog pimp. Why? Because, instead being randomly visited by some automated aggregator, there is the realization that there is some desperate soul actually typing the pimpage and leaving it on your blog. I documented a very sucks-cessful netizen on my blog a few months back. Busted!

  15. Oh yes, I remember that blog pimp. I read that post of yours a few months ago. Hey, wait a minute, you blog pimp!

I actually find a number of legitimate comments that end up in our spam filter and only a few spam that don’t. But if you are into watching how your site is doing on Technorati or are interested in seeing who’s linking to you on your dashboard page, these fake blogs really make a large percentage of the results useless.

Most of the incoming links on the B4B dashboard are from fake blogs just from the last two days. It’s very annoying when you get a lot of them, and we get tons.

  27. Spacebrother, I must step in and say that we edit/alter/delete VERY few comments — maybe a tiny fraction of them.

As a general rule, we will only do that if the comment contains profanity.

Or, as an example, I recently deleted one of Moxom’s comments. It contained nothing other than verbal abuse towards your hosts. If there had even been a sliver of a point, I would have let it pass, but it didn’t. It most certainly was not “truth” in any way, shape or form. It was just a verbally incontinent spew of pure hatred, and frankly, I didn’t think that ANY of us needed to see that. (Can we at least TRY to be civil, people?)

I’ve not deleted or otherwise amended any of your points, Spacebrother.

Hope this clarifies things a bit.

    Thanks!

You didn’t delete ANY comment thas was offensive against us.

I also gave you links to parts of this page that were REALLY homophobic, women-unfriendly. You also called me LAZY when I didn’t deliver them quickly enough, while your colleagues were bashing one of my friends verbally. I still haven’t seen ANY change in one of the topics which I gave you the links to. Kind of hypocritical to find only US offensive since we do share common vieuws with you, Lyssie (you are at least not as INSANE as some of the hosts here, and able to discuss a topic)

And regarding the topics to which you gave me links — I read them, but did not bother commenting or editing any of the threads in question, as they are old threads, and I presume that their readership has dwindled down to pretty much nothing (except for you, obsessive young thing that you are.) I did state VERY clearly that I did not agree with Bob’s assessment of women, and I’ve also disagreed with other things that some of my fellow hosts have stated. 52. I’m glad you reached the same conclusion, Chen. Spam links are bad enough, but they’re just an annoyance. But these fake blogs, or scraper sites (to use the technical term), are more insidious.

What they do that I object to the most, is to pollute search engine results by attempting to steer people away from the site that wrote information that they are seeking to their own sites so they can collect ad revenue. Many of these sites take advantage of Google Ad Sense. This program needs to be reformed or scrapped altogether, since it is in a large way responsible for the proliferation of scraper sites.

You can get an idea of what effect this is having regarding your own site by checking the Technorati and Google Blog search reactions to your site. But that’s just a drop in the bucket. There are many scraper sites that don’t even bother to link to your original post, so your content is excerpted or stolen in its entirety in lots of different places.

They will often hotlink your images as well, not bothering to make their own local copies. I’ve discovered a few sites that did this when I noticed some odd image referrers.

I hightly recommend you check out that bluehatseo site I referenced in comment two. It will get your blood boiling how these people cheer about being able to steal other people’s content to enrich themselves, with not a second thought given to the creative people they’re exploiting. It really stinks. Also check out the link in my update: profile of a turd. These people take unfair advantage of free blogs and clog the system with worthless blogs just to make a buck for their own worthless selves.

If the proliferation of scraper sites continues at its current rate and nothing is done to combat them, search results will be mostly useless and people will abandon blogs since they’re so infiltrated with worthless junk. It’s been estimated that 1 in 5 blogs is a spam blog (splog) or a fake blog (flog or scraper site). And that’s probably a low estimate. These people are pure scum.

  54. It doesn’t matter who keeps a blog, or what they write, it can be whatever they want to say or spread about; that’s the beauty of blogs, sure we get content we don’t like nor would agree with, however we have a right to communicate our thoughts, if we like.
I am sick and tired of these damned blog scrapers stealing my entries and putting them on their site without permission from me, or even using the correct name of the writer. Yes they might link-back to us, but so what?
It is the blog scrapers who ruin blogging and journaling online.
