The Splodydopes Started It

U.S. Marine Barracks, Beirut, 1982Today marks the 24th anniversary of the suicide bombing of U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon taking 241 American lives. The terrorists started their cowardly war against us decades ago. The United States will finish the War on Terror, with a vengeance.

Ed Morrissey takes note of this and also mentions that 22 years ago today, the Democrat party successfully Borked perhaps the most qualified jurist ever nominated to the Supreme Court by 58-42. His name was Judge Robert Bork.

Both of these years on this date will be remembered in infamy as attacks on our very way of life.

The evil terrorists and the traitorous left have been at war with America for as many years as most of us can remember. Both enemies, foreign and domestic, must be defeated if America is to maintain it’s place as the shining city on the hill, an example for enslaved peoples around the world.

Food for thought during Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week.

Update: Michelle Malkin remembers.

  1. It is really a shame they kicked out Robert Bork. Ed Meese was not enough to win the War on Pornography, unfortunately. This ‘right to privacy’ leads to back-alley abortions, sodomy, interracial marriage, masturbation, and watching that little space penis movie ET. Unfortunately, NO OTHER POLITICIAN has even dared to speak against this ‘right to privacy’, or at least not as well as Bork.

  2. Hey, how did Reagan respond to that bombing, anyway?

  3. I know what you’re getting at Chen. But you should know better. I’ll just pretend you and others don’t know the history and explain it for you.

Within six months U.S. troops were pulled out of Lebannon, and the terrorists continued their war on America. Part of the reason for the pullout was that political conditions had changed after the attack. There were those in the region that requested that we leave, fearing an escalation of violence in the region.

The region is still chaotic today. It’s hard (or easy for critics) to second guess the reaction and the policies behind them. But events since that time certainly demonstrate the folly in responding to terrorist attacks by cutting and running as the left would happily have us do.

We didn’t start the war, but we’d better finish it our way, not theirs.

I agree with statements made after the bombing.

President Ronald Reagan, less than one year into his first term, called it a “despicable act.” Secretary of Defense Cap Weinberger said the attack would have no effect on our Lebannon policy. And Vice President George H.W. Bush, after touring the bombed out barracks just days later, said that we “would not be cowed by terrorists.”

It’s a shame that we showed weakness in the face of evil. We know better now.

October 23, 1983 and September 11, 2001 taught us valuable lessons that we ought not ignore. Never surrender. Always prevail.

  4. Just wonderin’

Anyway, I know it probably won’t be popular for me to propose this, but is an attack on a military target on foreign soil an act of terrorism? Is it semantics? I mean, if they had used, say, a cruise missle (if they had one), would it have been terrorism? Is the difference just a matter of resources?

  6. Frankly, rename it into “war against al Queida” or “war against islamist extremists”. That´d be something you could actually win. Waging war against a tactic is simply stupid. Terrorism has existed since the stone age and will most likely exist in thousand years. Because it works. Oh, and anyone wearing a military uniform is fair game anyway. It´s only terrorism if it hits civilians. This was a surprise attack.
