Ames Straw Poll Results

Ames Straw PollSam Brownback is strong! His momentum is building. This is a great result, folks! Your prayers have paid off!

From Cyclone Conservatives come the raw numbers:

Results are certified by State Auditor David Vaudt and Chairman Ray Hoffmann:

Mitt Romney 4516 31.5%
Mike Huckabee 2587 18.1%
Sam Brownback 2192 15.3%
Tom Tancredo 1961 13.7%
Ron Paul 1305 9.1%
Tommy Thompson 1039 7.3%
Fred Thompson 203 1.4%
Rudy Giuliani 183 1.3%
Duncan Hunter 174 1.2%
John McCain 101 1.0%
John Cox 41 0.1%

14,302 Total Votes
26,000 Total Tickets Sold

Congratulations, Sam. It’s time to get back to work.

NOTE: Romney bought this thing, so it’s no surprise that his dirty campaign cash won the day. But it’s obvious that America is thirsting for a good Christian Republican to lead this nation forward. Huckabee is a fine man, make no mistake about that. Sam came in a very respectable third place. He beat the odds and the media cannot ignore him now. His campaign will move on. Many others will not. Thanks for all your prayers. They were instrumental in this glorious victory!

NOTE 2: It does seem a little strange, the tickets sold versus the votes cast. 14,302/26,000 is roughly 55%. Considering that tickets cost $35 apiece, and 11,698 tickets were not used for a vote in the poll, that’s $409,430 spent with no vote cast. That’s a lot of money. Hmmm. If I were a Democrat, I’d call for a recount.

Update: Sam sez: “For running no advertising, no television, no radio, and to come in close to second and in third place — that is fabulous and a great tribute to this campaign.” Amen.

He continued: “The results today are this is a ticket to the caucuses,” he said. “Iowa’s a field of dreams … and I’ve still got the dream.”

Update 2: Some disturbing math:

Mitt spent 3 million dollars… divided by 4500 votes… = $666.66 per vote….

Is Mittens the anti-Christ? He is slick. It may well be time to pray.

Update 3: 10,000 tickets for 4,516 votes. Well done, Mittens! More than half the people who you bought tickets for couldn’t stomach voting for you. Hooray!

Update 4: Seen on the Brownback for President site:

Brownback Pleased with Strong Showing in Ames AMES, Iowa – U.S. Senator Sam Brownback, Republican candidate for president, today spoke to supporters at the conclusion of the Ames Straw Poll. “Today we leave Ames with a ticket to the Iowa caucuses,” said Brownback. “Given that we were outspent by more than 10 to 1 and faced a multi-million dollar advertising blitz, we built a great foundation as we head into the caucuses.” The Brownback campaign received 2,192 votes and spent approximately $325,000 on the Straw Poll.

  2. Still, 14,302 is a remarkably insignificant portion of the nation.

  3. Linus, this is a great result for Senator Brownback. Can’t you just give him congratulations on this day? Otherwise I’ll be forced to tell you “Told you so!”

  5. Wait, I read Brownback spent the second most money.

Shouldn’t he be in second place????

Oh I guess money doesn’t necessary get you to the top.

That stinks I was hoping he would defeat Huckabee, especially because he put alot more money into this
    thing them him.

Looks like Huckabee will be a stronger canidate.

So with Guiliani, Mitt, Mccain, Fred Thompson, possibily Newt, Huckabee; Sam is far behind.

I don’t think Sam will catch on. His debate perfomances have been extremely poor. He isn’t a gifted speaker.

The straw poll is an eye opener to me that I need to switch my support to Romney.

He is a great speaker and a great family guy.

He also has an incredible record of changing organizations that he touches.

I think Sam is a great guy, but its time i think I move on.

Best of Luck Sam and the Sam Bloggers.

    It was a great ride.

  6. YEEEE HAAAAAAWWWW!!!

What’d I tell ya. Brownback scores in the straw poll. Romney had to bus people in to get his numbers.

Although I am concerned. 14,000 is about a third less voting than we had back in 2000. That can’t be good? Have the RINOs so dirtied the pool, that people aren’t even willing to show up to vote?

  7. Fortunately, Jared, like you Romney is a RINO. I’m happy that you are so willing to sell your values out for nothing. I bet you’re proud that you stand for nothing. Congratulations, RINO.

  10. Good going Sam. Once people wake up to see what kind of crook Rudy is and how clueless Romney is Sam will be number one.

Honestly I don’t get why people vote for Romney. The guy puts his foot in his mouth way too much to be a president.

  12. Is it possible that Romney is a plant by the Democrats to make the Republican party look bad? Sort of a Manchurian candidate?

  13. It’s a strong showing for Sam, no matter how you slice it.

  14. Ok, first you rant in like half a dozen articles how that poll´s rigged and doesn´t say anything etc. and now you suddenly bragg about how Sam got a rather surprisingly good result. Hey, either you boycott is from beginning to end or not. Flip-flopping like this is not something I´d have exspected from you.

  15. I think you misunderstand, PG. But that’s not surprising since this was called a “poll” just like the more common sample polls that are usually done by telephone. The Ames straw poll is where people actually physically cast ballots. They are motivated people who understand the issues and actually get off their butts to support a candidate.

It isn’t a so-called “random sample” poll where people who never vote are lumped in with people who actually do. The kind of polls I have criticized are of the latter type. And they are often juggled to overrepresent democrats.

This was an actual vote, unlike the polls posted every day in the media. I hope that clears up some of your confusion.

  16. If I were Sam Brownback I would see to it that reputable, Christian (non-Mormon) accounting firm looked over those poll numbers. I smell a polygamist rat in Utah named Mittens and we all know what one Mike Huckabee smells like.

  17. The poll is rigged PG, didn’t you read were Mitt Rommy’s Satanic master spent $666 per voter. Clearly Rommy’s spell wasn’t enough to stop the power of Jesus behind Sam Brownbeck.

    Comment by BJ Tabor — August 12, 2007 @ 3:06 pm | Reply

  18. Psyche, I meant the articles about the ames poll you and sisi posted here recently, claiming that the whole thing was quite rigged, too, seeing the amount of money the candidates put in. (Sam has brought in the 2nd biggest amount and is still 3rd? That´s somewhat embarrassing.)

    Comment by PG — August 13, 2007 @ 3:30 am | Reply

  19. It is rigged, PG, but the fact that even though Romney rigged the poll he couldn’t get over 31% is a big win for our man Sam!

    Comment by Harry — August 13, 2007 @ 10:04 am | Reply

  20. Vote for Ron Paul.

    Comment by Spacebrother — August 13, 2007 @ 3:48 pm | Reply

  21. Harry, Sam rigged it, too. All the candidates (or most) did. The only one who put more money into it than Sam was Romney.

That means Huckabee had actually more success despite putting less money into the poll than Sam!

  22. “The Ames straw poll is where people actually physically cast ballots. They are motivated people who understand the issues and actually get off their butts to support a candidate.”

Really? The public are paid $35 for their vote. How’s that for motivaton!!

“This was an actual vote, unlike the polls posted every day in the media.”

Ames means nothing, just like your opinion!
