Tomorrow is the big day: the Ames Straw poll. Romney’s got more money, so he’s got more buses. He’s spent hundreds of thousands if not millions to buy this poll, so everyone’s hoping that he fails to meet the high expectations. Sam Brownback will be doing his best to ensure that a principled, conservative Republican does well at Ames.
The Politico’s Johnathan Martin hasn’t exactly been friendly to Sam Brownback, but he had this to say about the bus situation:
Campaign aides for Mitt Romney and Sam Brownback have informed the Iowa GOP that they’ll each be bringing over 100 buses to the Ames Straw Poll Saturday. An Iowa Republican said that Romney was bringing about 125 onto the campus of Iowa State University and Brownback just over 100. Tommy Thompson is bringing the third most, about 75. All told, state party officials are planning on the arrival of 375 buses.
Naturally, Martin seems surprised that Brownback is working so hard at this thing, while Romney effortlessly spends piles of campaign cash:
That Brownback, who had just $460K on hand at the end of the second quarter, is bringing in nearly as many buses as Romney indicates just how hard a push he’s making. But keep in mind that not all Iowans take a candidate-provided bus to the festivities. Plenty of them will drive themselves. Also, there are sure to be people who could be called “faithless riders” — those who accept a free lift and a free meal on the way from one candidate, but vote for another on their secret ballot when they arrive.
So if Sam’s buses are all full, hitch a ride on one of Romney’s buses and vote for the best in the straw poll: Sam Brownback. It’s the right thing to do.
Tancredo may not be bringing in buses (as far as we know), but he is offering fabulous prizes, including an all-expenses paid trip to the Capitol in Washington D.C.
Good luck, Senator Brownback. You deserve every vote you get. You have been working tirelessly and under difficult circumstances for this moment. Please pray for Sam Brownback and that his supporters arrive safely in Ames to launch the great Kansas Senator to the White House in 2008 and beyond.
Update: The Brownback for President website has a schedule up for Saturday’s straw poll.
The air-conditioned Brownback Tent includes seating for 600 and a family area with games and attractions, including an intern dunk tank. Guests will enjoy Famous Dave’s BBQ, snow cones, cotton candy and popcorn. Rear projection screens will display a live video feed during Senator Brownback’s speech.
The lucky Iowans at this event will have a great time. I’m jealous!
