RU-486: As Lethal as Terrorism

Many anti-life pundits extol the virtues of RU-486, the so-called “morning after” murder pill. They would have women believe that they can consume this murder pill in personal safety, killing only the unborn child. But apparently, this gullible liberal belief is utter nonsense:

When a woman takes RU-486 she experiences severe cramping, nausea, vomiting and bleeding. Lester Hyman, a spokesman for the manufacturer of RU-486, Roussel-Uclaf, admitted “there is considerable pain with the procedure.” The emotional distress, however, may have even more impact. Rather than being “over with” in a few minutes (as in a surgical abortion) this abortion could last for over a week. When the woman finally does abort, she will expel a tiny dead human being – her baby. There will be no denying what is really aborted! Edouard Sakiz, the former president of Roussel-Uclaf admits that RU-486 abortions involve “an appalling psychological ordeal.” So much for “easy”.
Safe … In July 1996, an FDA advisory panel heard the testimony of Dr. Mark Louviere, telling of his experience treating a woman who had taken RU-486 for an abortion. She had lost 1/2 to 2/3 of her blood. She is just one of an estimated 15,000 to 30,000 women a year who will suffer complications from this drug. This is based on the anticipated rate of complications by The Population Council, who hold the patent for RU-486. They anticipate a 1% to 2% complication rate, including cardiac arrest, hemorrhage, and incomplete abortions. If this figure is projected on the 1.5 million abortions done in this country each year, that percentage represents an alarming number of women suffering complications every year. “Safe” is dangerous for women…

In reality, American women taking RU-486 will be just as much “guinea pigs” as women from the third world countries. Their health and life will be put at risk for a drug that has not been thoroughly tested, has been “fast tracked” through the FDA approval process and is known to bring about life threatening complications. American women are being used as a “springboard” to get this abortion drug into developing countries where it can be easily administered without a woman’s informed consent.

The bottom line is, murder is never easy. Even when the victim is very tiny, murder is murder.

The irony is, the same Hippies who march in protest of the deaths of terrorist and Islamists in Iraq will march in support of a pill that murders both infants and their mothers. This phenomenon is beyond comprehension, but one often has to suspend disbelief when discussing the “reality-based” ideas of the Left.

Hat tip:  uneditedmara.

  1. the so-called “morning after” murder pill.

A tiny quibble. RU-486 is indeed an abortion pill. The “morning-after” pill, also known as Plan B, or Emergency Contraception, is taken in order to prevent pregnancy, and will not harm an existing embryo. A lot of people on the right side of the debate tend to confuse the two, which only weakens our argument. You are absolutely right in saying that RU-486 is vile, though.

  2. Plan B is just as evil; it is a preemptive murder pill.

To me, it makes little difference whether you kill someone who’s there, or kill someone who would be there but for your actions. Murder is murder.

  3. I can see you feel pretty passionately about this, so I won’t get into it too much with you, but your position has a few logical flaws in it. By your definition, a married couple who practices natural family planning (which is sanctioned by the Catholic Church) is committing murder, as their actions are preventing “someone” from being born.

  4. Lyssie, I think you’re going a little overboard here. Natural family planning is a far cry from a pill designed to murder children in the womb.

Using your logic, a wife telling her husband she has a headache is murder. That’s just crazy talk!

  5. Sisyphus and Psycheout are obviously male. 😉

  6. Hey, I was just using Sisyphus’ logic:

To me, it makes little difference whether you kill someone who’s there, or kill someone who would be there but for your actions. Murder is murder.

He’s the one who stated that there’s no difference between destroying an existing life, or preventing a life from coming into being, via one’s actions. I was simply pointing out that his logic lends itself to being taken to absurd lengths. Are priests and nuns guilty of murder because of all of the children that COULD have been born, had they not taken a vow of celibacy? Exactly — it’s absurd. I share your loathing of RU-486, but we only weaken our focus by including Emergency Contraception in our arguments. Besides, not all conservatives are opposed to EC, particularly in cases of rape.
